Title of Thesis: DETERMINATION OF ROUND EXIT VELOCITY USING FIBER BRAGG GRATING SENSORS Degree Candidate: Arvind Ramaswamy Aiyar, Degree and Year: Master of Science, 2004 Thesis Directed By: Professor Christopher C. Davis Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering Optical fiber sensing technology has found widespread applications in smart structures and intelligent engineering systems. In particular, the use of fiber Bragg grating sensors for strain, temperature and pressure measurement has been an area of active research in the past decade. In this thesis, an experimental technique to measure the exit velocity of projectiles in field-deployed gun barrels is presented. In-fiber Bragg grating sensors are used to monitor the onset of propagating hoop strain waves accompanying the passage of rapidly moving projectiles. A fixed optical filter is used for providing temperature compensation and enable high-speed data acquisition. The elapsed time information extracted from the resulting strain waves is used to estimate the round exit velocity (REV). An approach based on short-time Fourier analysis and cross-correlation has been developed to accurately measure the REV to within 1% error. Results from livefire tests are presented and compared to reference velocity data.

Unique Solution of Short Pulse Propagation in Nonlinear Fiber Bragg Grating

In this study, a new numerical method is introduced to obtain the exact shape of output pulse in the chalcogenide fiber Bragg grating (FBG). A Gaussian pulse shape with 173 ps width is used as an input pulse for lunching to a 6.6 mm nonlinear FBG. Because of bistable and hysteresis nature of nonlinear FBG the time sequence of each portion of pulse is affected the shape of output pulse. So we di...

Localized Dispersive States in Nonlinear Coupled Mode Equations for Light Propagation in Fiber Bragg Gratings

Dispersión effects induce new instabilities and dynamics in the weakly nonlinear description of light propagation in fiber Bragg gratings. A new family of dispersive localized pulses that propágate with the group velocity is numerically found, and its stability is also analyzed. The unavoidable different asymptotic order of transport and dispersión effects plays a crucial role in the determinat...

Optimization of Bistability in Nonlinear Chalcogenide Fiber Bragg Grating for All Optical Switch and Memory Applications

We solve the coupled mode equations governing the chalcogenide nonlinear fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) numerically, and obtain the bistability characteristics. The characteristics of the chalcogenide nonlinear FBGs such as: switching threshold intensity, bistability interval and on-off switching ratio are studied. The effects of FBG length and its third order nonlinear refractive index on FBG cha...

Cover page Title: Strain Monitoring of Filament Wound Composite Tank Using Fiber Bragg Grating Sensors

In this paper, we present strain monitoring of a filament wound composite tank using fiber Bragg grating sensors during hydrostatic pressurization. 20 fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors and 20 strain gauges were attached on the domes and cylinder of the composite tank. A wavelength-swept fiber laser (WSFL) was used as a light source to supply high signal power. From the experimental results, it ...

Creating very slow optical gap solitons with a grating-assisted coupler.

We show that optical gap solitons can be produced with velocities down to 4% of the group velocity of light using a grating-assisted coupler, i.e., a fiber Bragg grating that is linearly coupled to a non-Bragg fiber over a finite domain. Forward- and backward-moving light pulses in the non-Bragg fiber(s) that reach the coupling region simultaneously couple into the Bragg fiber and form a moving...
